Cobham 2007 / 2008

HAPPY NEW YEAR

At the end of December we had 3 days in the Southern Drakensberg Mountains at Cobham, a KZN Wildlife Reserve. We were able to try out all the kit we’d bought and were very pleased with how well everything worked.

The weather and the scenery were fantastic. We were glad to have found a shady tree to camp under and for the fridge which kept our food cool and provided us with very welcome cold drinks.

We also enjoyed swimming in the river after walking in the hills.

Kevin has spent a lot of time working on fitting out the inside of the Cruiser. We bought some slide out drawers and he has made a platform to go on top of the drawers and a box which fits between the back seat and the platform. We’ve also bought quite a bit of kit. We decided on a ground tent rather than one that goes on the roof of the Cruiser so bought an Oz tent which is very easy to put up – it only takes a couple of minutes - it can either be carried in the back of the Cruiser or on the roof (once we get a roof rack). We also bought a 40 litre fridge and Kevin has made a box for it to sit in so that it doesn’t move about in the back of the vehicle.

Christmas was spent with the family in Richmond, KwaZulu- Natal

November 2007

Arrived in South Africa on the 15th and the following week bought a Toyota Landcruiser Prado (10 years old). We've had the following modifications made to the vehicle:

  • Old Man Emu suspension (for going over all that rough ground).

  • Bullbars (in case we meet up unexpectedly with any anmals).

  • A safari snorkel ( to help keep the engine cool and free fom sand).

  • A leisure battery (so that we can run a fridge, light etc) .

  • A long range fuel tank (don't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere with no fuel).

  • A winch (for getting us or other vehicles out of trouble).

We've aleady tried out the winch (pulling out an old tree in the back field at Pat and Colin's and have had a go on a 4x4 trail where we tried some of the easier obstacles.
